Popular technology news site TechCrunch is today reporting a "source" suggesting that Instagram is about to become a video-sharing app following the rapid success of Vine.
Rumours are abound after Facebook invited American journalists to an event on 20th June with the words "A small team has been working on a big idea".
Facebook's photo-sharing app has a reported 100m users, many of which will be crossing over to use Twitter's six-second looping film program Vine, making video compatibility the logical evolution of Instagram. It's not hard to see why Facebook would explore pushing the abilities of their $715m app, retaining users whilst adding to a trusted and successful brand.
Social metrics and analytics measurer Socialbakers announced that Vine engagement has almost matched that of YouTube after just six months of existence. YouTube's one billion monthly viewers suggest it's now a more popular global medium than television - so Vine's high rate of data upload, coupled with surprising levels of user engagement - make the video-sharing app and major player in the social space.
Instagram was famously founded by a small team of developers - what possibilities could a video feature bring to life for coders?
