Apple unveils iOS 7 in software overhaul

Tech giant Apple yesterday unveiled its latest operating system to much fanfare from more than 6,000 Apple developers at their Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

"It's the biggest change to iOS since the iPhone," said Chief Executive Tim Cook.

In a move that many have dubbed as "style over substance" the new design has been described as "flatter" with gradient textures phased out for a larger, bolder monochrome aesthetic.

"We wanted to take an experience people know, and add to it. iOS 7 defines an important new direction and a beginning," said London-born designer Sir Jonathan Ive.

"We have always thought of design as being more than the way something looks, its the whole thing, the way something work on so many levels. We’ve considered the tiniest detail, and redesigned all the icons."

Amongst the clamour of divisive design changes, a host of new features have also been announced, with a new version of Safari web browser, an iTunes Radio app, updated Apple Maps and a new line of Macbook Air laptops.
