eBay join 3D printing revolution with iPhone app

Online auction site eBay have jumped aboard the growing phenomenon of 3D printing with the beta release of eBay Exact - a smartphone app dedicated to the sale (and subsequent print) of compatible products.
Products are in their infancy - largely phone cases, jewellery and the like - but all are fully customisable via the app and are produced by three burgeoning 3D tech companies, MakerBot, Sculpteo, and Hot Pop Factory.

According to Tech Crunch:

The items, which start at around $9 for an iPhone case and go up as high as $350 for a metal ring, can be configured then ordered directly in the mobile application. Ebay’s partners will then ship the products directly to consumers within 7 to 14 days.

In the UK, retailer Maplin famously unveiled the cheapest 3D printer £699, the first for home printing. How long before creatives begin to design and market their own art and products for customers to download at print at home?

Readers in the U.S can download the app on iTunes.
