So what have we learned?

With HTML5 predicted to outstrip Flash - particularly in online adverts - within two years, Google has sought to hand power over to the everyman marketer, removing the crutch for high-end coding skills. The option to customise the CSS and JavaScript is still intact for techies, but new default layouts (and a "Quick mode") for DoubleClick and AdMob advertising platforms are designed to make the tool the primary resource for search and online marketers, whose clicks are worth billions in revenue to Google.

High in usability for non-coders, users can drag-and-drop their images and animations into a friendly build view, making quick designs and striking visuals an easy process. Crucially, its also free - saving $15 per month compared to Adobe's Muse alternative.

Sean Kranzberg, a Lead Engineer behind the project wrote on the Google blog: "We think that Google Web Designer will be the key to making HTML5 accessible to people throughout the industry, getting us closer to the goal of 'build once, run anywhere.'"

But can it "run anywhere"?

Critics have suggested that the major flaw with this new tool is the lack of cross-browser .The code generated is, predictably, designed for Chrome, Google's flagship browser. But despite Chrome's popularity, the majority of desktops primarily use Microsoft's Internet Explorer, whilst Mozilla's Firefox is also a common choice. The new adverts created may not translate over too well to other browsers, limiting and alienating the experience for a major demographic.

While this is all part of Google's larger data strategy - their own-brand add-tracking alternative to cookies is rumoured to be in development - marketers enjoying this simplified tool may find their campaigns perhaps limited. Check out this review for a more detailed analysis.

Monopoly criticism aside; this is a fantastic and potentially revolutionary tool which both hardened coders and novice marketers can quickly adopt. New projects can be published within the hour, it carries Google's product-wide compatibility measures with the inclusion of DoubleClick and best of all, its free software.

With smartphones now globally outselling standard handsets for the first time, the $12m, two-year deal for Downey's services seems like small change in the battle against Samsung and Apple.
According to the HTC press release:

With Robert Downey Jr. as the instigator of change, the creative ads explore imaginative HTC word associations to invoke interest and talkability amongst consumers. The narrative follows the well-known actor and director as he kicks-off the realm of change made possible by HTC. Designed to demonstrate HTC’s role as a change maker the ad creative will feature a range of possible HTC acronyms including Humongous Tinfoil Catamaran and Hipster Troll Carwash. This will be supported by a series of social engagement and experiential activities that will bring the campaign to life.

"Our original and playful Change platform is different to anything else out there and aligns our brand with the same qualities our phones are already known for. With this campaign, we are affirming what HTC’s role is in the mobile market which is to define change and to lead the industry in developing the newest and most innovative technologies."

Jurors had previously ruled that Samsung had violated or infringed upon multiple Apple patents, awarding Apple $1.05bn last year. This latest contest over U.S. Patent No. 7,844,915, which describes the way a user can 'pinch-to-zoom', could yet unravel last year's settlement.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ultimately declared that 21 of the 24 contested functions were rejected, with the 'pinch-to-zoom' feature predicated by Patent No. 7,724,242, relating to gestures on touch screens, which had been filed by W. Daniel Hillis and Bran Ferren of Applied Minds in 2005.

Google have at last unveiled the redesign of the Motorola brand following their $12.5bn acquisition in May last year.

Following months of lawsuits, lay-offs and patent disagreements, Motorola Mobility has a new image.

Featuring a new colour scheme, typeface and tagline, adhering to the minimalist, soft and clean design trends favoured by Android and iOS systems, only the iconic "M" design has been retained from the original red format. The logo has been revealed in time for Motorola's sponsorship of a major tech conference in Chicago - the birthplace of Motorla - next week, according to CNET.

Design site Creative Bloq has detailed Motorola's colourful history as an American brand.

Founded in Chicago in 1928, the company manufactured one of the first car radios, the first walkie-talkie, and a series of communications devices that were vital to Allied forces during the Second World War. The Cathode Ray tube it co-developed became the TV industry standard; in 1969 Neil Armstrong said "One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind" from the Moon on a Motorola transceiver; and in 1973, Motorola demonstrated the first hand-held portable telephone.

The famous "emsignia" logo was created by Chicago graphic designer Morton Goldsholl in 1954. Google have not entirely abandoned Motorola's rich story as an all-American brand; with manufacture and design of their next handset, the Moto X, coming this summer out of Texas - the first smartphone built in the United States.

And as an expensive and controversial "Google company", expectations for the reinvention of Motorola are high indeed.

Fans of the show will identify with the faux press release following the recent company merger of season 8, commitment from AMC to give the brand life through social media, and clever "quotes" from the show's characters, including Peggy as chief copywriter.

Whilst Bijani's interest in the purchase of Tumblr has not been identified, TIME magazine reported that $66m will be allocated to Tumblr's 178 employees. In an interview with marketing and design magazine The Drum, 25-year creative veteran Patrick Collister discusses his new job, his philosophy and being dubbed as Google's "head of design".

“I think there’s been a bit of a misunderstanding about this,” he says, instantly debunking his new title inherited from his predecessor Irene Au.

“In America I was reported as being the head of design for Google, and Google did have a head of design but that’s somebody who’s completely responsible for the way Google pages look online, responsible for the way the software programmes open up – that’s definitely not me, that’s a very big job and I couldn't design my way out of a paper bag. Jingles and slogans is my background."

But Google, among the most recognised brands in the world, still has need of creative minds in both its design and marketing business - and Collister's experience is the conduit.

“My role here is really to bring ad thinking to what is essentially a media agency. Google is filled with some incredibly clever people, but they look at platforms and they look at the way different media opportunities knit together.

“They’re aware that you still need to have ideas to fill these spaces, whatever they may be, and they’ve got people inside the building who are quite capable of filling it. My role is to come here and actually fill it with stuff that is inspiring and is best in class. Now that’s not to say that Google is turning into an ad agency, because it’s not.”

Collister goes on to discuss the ethics and morality of marketers, the advent of big data and his theory on direct marketing - which you can read here.

Creativesrus support all manner of creative minds - whether designers or marketers - and do our utmost to match them to the best jobs on the market.
